When Ignorance is Not Bliss

On December 13, 2011, Michael Gerson posted “Gingrich’s Embrace of Shallow Ideas” on TownHall.com. In this column, he blasted former Speaker Gingrich for his honest assessment of Sharia law, its implications in the West, in general, and the United States, in particular.

The sad thing about Mr. Gerson is that he was President George W. Bush’s speech writer.  Though President Bush is a good man who is respected by so many, including me, his confused and incoherent policies regarding Islamic fundamentalism landed us in two wars – one of which was totally unnecessary.  I am referring to the Iraq War, a war that directly gave rise to the current Iranian threat and rise to power.

Mr. Gerson’s incoherent policies were inflicted upon us in conflicting statements made by Mr. Bush regarding Islam when he was president.  He once referred to Islam as a “religion of peace,” but soon began calling it Islamofascism. Which one is it, Mr. Gerson? He also inaccurately stated that Christians and Muslims worship the same God.

Speaker Gingrich has had the courage to call Sharia what it is: “...inherently brutal -- defined by oppression, stonings and beheadings...” For his courage, Speaker Gingrich needs to be praised, not criticized.  The evidence of stoning and beheading women for the mere accusation of adultery fills the Saudi landscape.  Only a person who decides to deliberately and meditatively place blinders on their eyes can ignore these realities. In fact, the harsh realities of Sharia are not limited to Islamic countries.  As I recounted in my recent book, When the Crosses are Gone, Sharia law was upheld in New Jersey family court in 2009 when a woman was denied a restraining order against her Moroccan ex-husband who had repeatedly entered her home and forced her to have sex against her will.  The ex-husband and his imam argued that Sharia law did not give her the right to deny him. She lived in fear of being raped by him for a year before the decision was overturned on appeal.

In Mr. Gerson’s most recent column, he bases his assessment regarding Sharia on the writings of a beleaguered, tiny minority of secular Muslims who, to their credit, are trying very hard to reinterpret Islam in the light of the 21st century.  This beleaguered, threatened, tiny minority of secular Muslims is not only living under a constant threat by the Muslim majority, but are not even considered to be true Muslims by that same majority.

Had President Bush and his speech writer, Mr. Gerson, understood the realities on the ground in the Middle East, they would have called upon the King of Saudi Arabia to move into the 21st Century and abandon Sharia rather than hold hands with him on Mr. Bush’s ranch in Crawford, TX.

Because I am neither a politician nor affiliated with a political party, it matters very little to me whether it is a Democrat or a Republican muddling the truth.  Therefore, I call upon both Democrats and Republicans to face the facts of the danger of Sharia.

Michael Youssef, Ph.D. is the author of more than two-dozen books, the latest of which is When the Crosses Are Gone: Restoring Sanity to a World Gone Mad.  He is currently working on a new book on the rise of radical Islam in the West—scheduled to be released in Spring 2012.

Dr. Youssef is like a voice crying in the wilderness. He has seen - for decades - the truth of Islam. He has sounded the warning again and again. The reactions to these warnings, in the halls of our highest government offices and in the lives of people who vote with their feelings instead of their minds, have proven to me that "political correctness kills." It allows evil to grow and roam unchecked.

In his book "The Sun Also Rises," Steinbeck's character Mike Campbell was asked how he went bankrupt. The answer, "Gradually... then all of a sudden." For Campbell the warning signs were everywhere. This is how this evil is presenting itself in various parts of the world, "gradually... then all of a sudden." The warning signs are everywhere.

Dr. Youssef is declaring the truth. I pray that people will listen. As a friend of mine once said, "You can listen to the whisper, or wait for the brick."

How true this is, exactly the same in the U.K

As Dr. Youssef states: "Only a person who decides to deliberately and meditatively place blinders on their eyes can ignore these realities." The Bible confirms this statement, plainly stating that unless a person opens their heart to God and receives the new birth through the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, they are blind and cannot see as well as deaf and cannot hear (from God)--obviously revealing the condition of Mr. Gerson's heart and WHY he ascribes to and supports something as hideous as Sharia law, continually making false, unbiblical statements (such as Christians and Muslims worshipping the same God -- how blatantly ridiculous!). As I see it, Mr. Gerson's problem is that his (confused and incoherently) unscriptural statements are the (woefully corrupt) fruit of his (meditatively deliberate) decision to reject God's goodness and wisdom, making him WITHOUT EXCUSE as the Bible warns for all those using their God-given free will to resist the truth. Tragic is the large number of (blind/deaf) enemies of Christ having access to public forums these days.

Must respectfully disagree with the statement regarding "landed us in two wars". WMD's were a proven threat, and Saddam Hussein's genocide against the Kurds serves as a reminder of our justification for intervention. His lack of cooperation with UN weapons inspection teams presented a threat to stability in the region and a danger to the US and our allies. Thankful for Newt's courage to speak the truth regarding Sharia law, and your continued courage to speak out against radical Islam. The relentless attack on the Cross, our Constitution, and the cancer growing in our churches today to deny Christ is an abomination.

On the other hand what is Adultery, Divorce, Abortion , deceitful Planned parent hood, Gay agendas & its promotions, enticing children in the name of education, trying to remove the very name of Jesus Christ, all of the Pagan philosophy which the west is embracing through the deceitful means of Obama, the democrats, with the Clinton's as an integral part of this wicked "Conspiracy". Even the Pagans shun some of their own philosophies except the Fascists among them in tune with the Biblical Prophesy which states "One of the heads of the Beast, which had received a deadly wound was found Healing" on this Michael needs to reassess his priorities. As Jesus Christ said of the manner "Better to pluck any member of the body which sins, than to go in the fulness of the body to hell". As far as Bush is concerned, has not people still understood him as Outwardly Christian, but inwardly a Pagan, who has damaged the GOP base, as can be seen in its fractured state today. So much so for all his goodness & he has endorsed Romney. So another four years of Obama/Romney being different sides of the same coin, is anybody's guess.

I have to agree with (respectfully disagree). Bush was on his A game during the first five years of his Presidency. His head was clear and it appears that he was being guided by his relationship with the All Mighty. But as time wore on, he became a follower of misguided and politically driven men. His final two years were full of poor knee jerk reactions. Setting the stage for the evil that now reigns in these United States. Bushs' wavering during his most critical hours, 07' and 08', paved these roads that we now wonder aimlessly on. At no other point in U.S. history did we need for our president to hold firm by pushing back against the onslaught that only could come from one place. That place being the pits of hell. We have become the orchestrator of the coalition that resists and rejects our All Mighty God. Lord please allow for us , the USA, a place within your will, for a return to our christian foundation. Otherwise we as a nation are not worthy of your blessings and our demise will be imminent.

"Lord please allow for us , the USA, a place within your will, for a return to our christian foundation. " This is so true. If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do? If we pray according to his will we know that he hears us, and if he hears us, we know that we have what we ask for.

Would we have reelected Bush in 04, and defended him as Christians leading up to the 04' election? If we would have believed that Bush had led us into two unwarranted wars. Dr. Youseff is a magnificent voice for all the world to hear. But please sir don't except the lefts onslaught and lies that had dominated virtually all of media . A creation of evil, too raise up a government here in the United States, that would be needed to eliminate Gods final Earthly shield of armour for his sacred land known as Israel. The USA has been a significant vessel in Israels rise back to the forefront. Our strength as a Nation has held order in this world, All glory to the All Mighty. For God has given this Nation the courage and the fortitude to resist this worlds evil for over 200 years. Our existence without courage will lead to the unfathomable future that sits on the horizon. Our forces will someday soon turn its sword on Christian America. The lefts lies regarding the Iraq war will be responsible for the power shift that turns the current greatness of our military, into a killing machine for evil within our own shores. I pray this does not come too pass.

Newt Gingrich is the only candidate who could successfully win a debate with Obama. The Democrats were hoping for Romney to be the Republican candidate because he is so wishy-washy and says what he thinks the audience wants to hear. Anyone who talks so fast and changes the subject when he doesn't want to answer it...with more fast talk is a fake. My opinion is that you should have Newt on your TV program to show support. There was a time when I didn't like him at all, but after listening to him now, something has changed in his heart...and it shows. I really believe that he will know how to return America back to our original roots and the constitution...For ONE, he KNOWS the role of govmt. and the separation of powers of the 3 branches of govmt. Everyone who lives under oppressive governments are willing to risk their lives to come to the land of the free. We are seeing lately "foreign" laws used as precidents in court cases here in free America. I hope people will wake up and not fall for the phoney baloney Romney and a couple others are spouting. We only have to look at the effect Sharia law has had on Europe. Non-muslim women are dressing like muslims in order not to be harrassed. The homosexual left should also take note that Sharia law demands their death....not "rights". It's surprising how silent they are on this issue. Thank for telling the truth. I know you risk all to preach the good news to hurting people who have only been taught to hate. God Bless you and your family and your outreach to the world.
